New York City
Perhaps no other North American city has taken as many aggressive actions as New York. In 2019 The New York City Council passed what is Local Law 97. In it, the City has taken historical use of energy, including gas, steam and electricity and mapped out usage throughout every building over 25,000 Square Feet (over 50,000 Structures) in its 5 boroughs. After establishing these benchmarks, it projected necessary building upgrades, and then prescribed these be completed by 2024. In 2024, if your building cannot meet its carbon reduction plan, fines will be levied. The fines continue until the building is upgraded, and will double, and triple over the next decade. While this may sound punitive,
NYC has committed low interest and no interest loans for these long- term investments. The bottom line is this: NYC cannot buy enough energy to power up all their buildings unless monumental change happens.
